Basic God Rays

Got a picture that you just wish had those rays shining through the windows, a crack in the roof or somewhere else? Down below you will find a simple and easy way to create your own god rays.

1. Create a new document, the size is up to you, but for this tutorial I've decided to go with 2048x2048 pixels.

2. Make the canvas all black, then create a new layer.

3. Select your Elliptical Marquee Tool ('M'), set feather to around 20px. Hold shift and click and drag 'til you have a circle in the middle of the canvas.Set your foreground color as a white or light grey tone (i.e #ececec)., and your background color should be black.

4. Set (or make sure) your foreground color as a white or light grey tone (i.e #ececec), and your background color should be black.

5. Go to Filter>Render and select Clouds.

6. Now go to Filter>Blur and select Radial Blur. Alter the settings to the following:

And then press OK. If you wish you can run the filter one, two more times by pressing 'Ctrl+F'.

7. Next we need to adjust the Levels ('Ctrl+L')of our ray layer. This part is a bit of taste.

I myself went for this style of rays:

8. Go to the Channels layer and Ctrl+Lclick on the thumbnail for the RGB channel, copy
and paste into the picture that you wish to have rays.

At this point you're pretty much done with the basic, but there's always room for fine tuning.

Blend Modes Comparison

A small comparison of various blend modes that can be used when you do some touch-ups on your images by hand. Which one is to prefer? Which tones works best? It's all about taste and what you are going for style wise.
